With that being said, instead of doing a Monthly Wrap Up, I am just going to post a book review. It’s been ages since I posted one so here ya go. Also, this was one of my favorite  books of the year in 2016! Continue reading “Book Review: The Lovely Reckless by Kami Garcia”

December 2016 Monthly Wrap Up

Happy New Year! Another year has come and gone. I won’t lie and say that 2016 was my favorite year but I can admit that 2016 changed me as a person. But leaving that aside, 2016 was a big year of firsts for me. I started this blog, got my Instagram up and running, and knocked out some chapters in my novel.

I’ve decided that 2017 will be a year of writing. My New Years Resolution is to be more committed to his blog and work harder on my novel. I have some ideas for HarleeReads that I need to work out that will make this blog thrive like I know it can. I want to read more books. I want to expand my interests and read different types of novels. I also want to start working on my novel more often. I said last year that my goal was to finish it but that never happened. This year, I’d like to try and get a first draft done.

Enough about resolutions and goals and on with the books I read in December. This month was a rough month for me personally. It made me appreciate books and what they can do to a person. Just a quiet moment alone with a book makes me relax. I need more of that in 2017. I need to make more time for me and the things I love.

Gathering Darkness (Falling Kingdoms, #3) by Morgan Rhodes | 4/5

17342700

I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the others in the series. I found it slow and lagging. Not saying I hated it because I definitely didn’t, but it’s just not my favorite book so far.

Delirium (Delirium, #1) by Lauren Oliver | 3/5

11614718

Looking at my rating, it seems like I may not have enjoyed this book. But let’s be real…I did like it. It was your typical dystopian YA romance and I’m a sucker for those types of books. I want to continue with the series because the idea is intriguing and I want to see where the story goes. I wrote a review that should be up next week.

Frozen Tides (Falling Kingdoms, #4) by Morgan Rhodes | 4/5

17342701

Now this book was great! I could do without Lucia but oh well. I fell more in love with Magnus in this book than before. HELP.

The Lovely Reckless by Kami Garcia | 5/5

27414434

This book surprised me. I loved it. It’s sexy, funny, and intense. Read it, I promise you’ll love it.

Lover Enshrined (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #6) by J.R. Ward | 3/5

1240662

Didn’t like this one as much as the others. I was a bit let down, to be honest.
So there you go y’all. Those were my books read in December. Be prepared for new additions to my blog coming soon!

Top Ten Best Books of 2016

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. You can find a new list of Top Ten things on their blog every at midnight on Tuesday.

Today’s Top Ten Tuesday is quite exciting! I get to talk about the best books that I read this year. There are a few books in this list that I love more than others but for the most part, the list has no order. I know I’ve been a bit MIA but I just had to post this today. I was too excited to talk about my favorites of the year!

(Now before anyone says anything, not all of these book came out in 2016. Some are but the others are just books that I picked up and ended up loving.)

Here we go!

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

ACOMAF-cover1

If you know me, you know that I am STILL obsessed with this book. I think ACOMAF is my favorite book of the year. Everything about this book was perfect. I honestly cannot wait for A Court of Wings and Ruin. May 2017 needs to hurry the hell up cause I can’t even deal.

Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare

25494343

I love everything dealing with our favorite Shadowhunters and this was perfect. It’s so nice to continue the story and see more of this world.

Empire of Storms by Cassandra Clare

28260587

I’m still not okay with this book but I still loved it none the less. I’m sad and scared about what is going to happen in the next book. But I will say, this book exceeded my expectations.

It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover

27362503

This is such a beautiful novel. Just this year, I was introduced to Colleen Hoover and I’m obsessed with her writing. Everything about this book was perfect. I laughed, I cried, and the story stayed with me for weeks.

Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco

28962906

THIS BOOK! I should have put it higher on the list but oh well. I love love loveee this book. I can’t even begin to describe how much I love this book. Pick it up and read it. It’ll change your life. I promise.

The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater

17378527

I loved this series. I think the The Raven King was my favorite of the four, but the series as a whole is incredible. It has so many elements thrown into one story. I love Maggie Stiefvater’s writing style.

Passenger by Alexandra Bracken

20983362

I’m a sucker for time travel and a good romance. I was lucky because this book has both! I fell in love with Alex Bracken’s writing with The Darkest Minds and she did not disappoint with Passenger. I can’t wait for Wayfarer.

Tiger’s Curse by Colleen Houck

51mbepfh0wl-_sy344_bo1204203200_

I picked the first book in the series because this was my favorite out of all of them. The entire arc of the story from book one to book four is such a great and epic journey. I feel like this is Colleen Houck at her best.

The Lovely Reckless by Kami Garcia

27414434

Bad boys, illegal car racing, true love…what more could you want? This book was fantastic. It was sexy, smart, and down right perfect. I loved every second of this!

Lover Awakened by J. R. Ward

42900

I became obsessed with the Black Dagger Brotherhood this year and I don’t regret a second of it. This was my favorite book in the series so far…now, I do have many books left to go so who knows. But I love Z. He’s my favorite and this book confirmed our love.

Border 10

So there you go. That was fun! It was kind of like a trip down memory lane and revisiting my fave books of the year just made me happy. I mean, now I want to reread many of the book listed above…

I hope ya’ll have a great rest of the holiday season!

See you all in 2017!

November 2016 Wrap Up

Hello all!! It’s been about a month since I’ve last posted. I could list a million excuses as to why I haven’t been posting and none of them would be good enough. I got wrapped up in life and just left this blog neglected…BUT NO LONGER.

As you will notice in this wrap up, things will be different from now on. I have decided to include other things in my Wrap Ups. I want to get more connected with you guys and talk about other things besides just books. I want to talk movies, tv shows, bookstagram, and anything else I’m in the mood to talk about. I want to update you guys on my book writing as well. I want us to be friends and share our thoughts on the things we love.

1

So for those who don’t know, I’m writing a novel! It’s a YA fantasy set in New Orleans with a hint of time travel and magic. I’m from Louisiana and New Orleans culture has been integrated into my life since a child. I’ve visited countless times and the atmosphere of the city is perfect setting for an epic.

I had this dream one night that was really dark and had this Gothic theme to it that I just couldn’t get it out my mind. A few nights later, I couldn’t sleep so I started think about this dream and my story started coming together. The next day, I wrote out the arc of the story from beginning to end and started writing.

I have to admit that I haven’t written in months. The laptop that I have is not the best for writing and I tried free handing it but it wasn’t working. I’m in a huge writing slump. NOT GOOD! I have a trip planned to New Orleans on the 12th of this month. I’m ready to be hit with inspiration. Until then, we’ll see if I progress.

Lover Unbound (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #5) by J.R. Ward | 4/5

6520996

The ruthless and brilliant brother Vishous possesses a destructive curse and a frightening ability to see the future. As a member of the Brotherhood, he has no interest in love or emotion, only the battle with the Lessening Society. But when a mortal injury puts him in the care of a human surgeon, Dr. Jane Whitcomb compels him to reveal his inner pain and taste true pleasure for the first time-until a destiny he didn’t choose takes him into a future that does not include her…

I love love LOVE these books. Just when I think it can’t get better, it does. I can’t wait to continue the series and read about the other Brother’s stories.

Doon (Doon, #1) by Carey Corp | 4/5

17745735

Veronica doesn’t think she’s going crazy. But why can’t anyone else see the mysterious blond boy who keeps popping up wherever she goes? When her best friend, Mackenna, invites her to spend the summer in Scotland, Veronica jumps at the opportunity to leave her complicated life behind for a few months.

But the Scottish countryside holds other plans.

Not only has the imaginary kilted boy followed her to Alloway, she and Mackenna uncover a strange set of rings and a very unnerving letter from Mackenna’s great aunt—and when the girls test the instructions Aunt Gracie left behind, they find themselves transported to a land that defies explanation. Doon seems like a real-life fairy tale, complete with one prince who has eyes for Mackenna and another who looks suspiciously like the boy from Veronica’s daydreams. But Doon has a dark underbelly as well. The two girls could have everything they’ve longed for…or they could end up breaking an enchantment and find themselves trapped in a world that has become a nightmare.

DOON is loosely based on the premise of the musical Brigadoon, with permission from the ALan Jay Lerner Estate and the Frederick Loewe Foundation. Follow the journey at http://www.DoonSeries.com

~Destiny awaits!

I enjoyed this story. It’s like Outlander for a younger audience. It was bit fluffy for me and I kept waiting for more to happen but overall, it was an enjoyable read. I’ll definitely read the rest of the series one day. I want to know what happens in the end.

Falling Kingdoms (Falling Kingdoms, #1) by Morgan Rhodes | 5/5

12954620

In the three kingdoms of Mytica, magic has long been forgotten. And while hard-won peace has reigned for centuries, a deadly unrest now simmers below the surface.

As the rulers of each kingdom grapple for power, the lives of their subjects are brutally transformed… and four key players, royals and rebels alike, find their fates forever intertwined. Cleo, Jonas, Lucia, and Magnus are caught in a dizzying world of treacherous betrayals, shocking murders, secret alliances, and even unforeseen love.

The only outcome that’s certain is that kingdoms will fall. Who will emerge triumphant when all they know has collapsed?

It’s the eve of war…. Choose your side.

Princess: Raised in pampered luxury, Cleo must now embark on a rough and treacherous journey into enemy territory in search of magic long thought extinct.

Rebel: Jonas, enraged at injustice, lashes out against the forces of oppression that have kept his country cruelly impoverished. To his shock, he finds himself the leader of a people’s revolution centuries in the making.

Sorceress: Lucia, adopted at birth into the royal family, discovers the truth about her past—and the supernatural legacy she is destined to wield.

Heir: Bred for aggression and trained to conquer, firstborn son Magnus begins to realize that the heart can be more lethal than the sword….

THIS SERIES! I am obsessed already. I have read her spinoff series that go with these books and I wanted to check out Falling Kingdoms. I’m so happy that I did! I’m in love.

Rebel Spring (Falling Kingdoms, #2) by Morgan Rhodes | 5/5

16000044

The road to power… is paved with blood and magic.

Cleo is now a prisoner in her own palace, forced to be an ambassador for Mytica as the evil King Gaius lies to her people.
Magnus stands to eventually inherit the new kingdom but is still obsessed with his feelings for his adopted sister, Lucia.
Lucia is haunted by the outcome of the breathtaking display of magic that allowed her father to capture the kingdoms.
Jonas watched at the palace gates a troop of rebels behind him, waiting for him to tell them how he plans to overtake King Gaius.

After a bloody siege, Auranos has been defeated, its young queen orphaned and dethroned. The three kingdoms—Auranos, Limeros, and Paelsia—are now unwillingly united as one country called Mytica. But the allure of ancient, dangerous magic beckons still, and with it the chance to rule not just Mytica, but the whole world over…

At the heart of the fray are four brave young people grappling for that magic and the power it promises. For Cleo, the magic would enable her to reclaim her royal seat. In Jonas’s hands, it frees his nation, and in Lucia’s, it fulfills the ancient prophecy of her destiny. And if the magic were Magnus’s, he would finally prove his worth in the eyes of his cruel and scheming father, King Gaius, who rules Mytica with a punishing hand.

When Gaius begins to build a road into the Forbidden Mountains to physically link all of Mytica, he sparks a long-smoking fire in the hearts of the people that will forever change the face of this land. For Gaius’s road is paved with blood, and its construction will have cosmic consequences.

Gathering Darkness (Falling Kingdoms, #3) by Morgan Rhodes | 4/5

17342700

In GATHERING DARKNESS, book three of the New York Times bestselling Falling Kingdoms series, the stakes have never been higher as three teams push forward on a race to find the Kindred, the four elemental crystals possessing ancient all-powerful magic, first:

Prince Magnus has just witnessed torture, death, and miracles during the bloody confrontation that decimated the rebel forces. Now he must choose between family and justice as his father, the cruel King Gaius, sets out to conquer all of Mytica. All Gaius needs now are the Kindred – the four elemental crystals that give godlike powers to their owner. But the King of Blood is not the only one hunting for this ancient, storied magic…

• THE KRAESHIANS join the hunt. Ashur and Amara, the royal siblings from the wealthy kingdom across the Silver Sea, charm and manipulate their way to the Kindred, proving to be more ruthless than perhaps even the King of Blood himself.

• THE REBELS forge ahead. Princess Cleo and vengeful Jonas lead them, slaying with sweetness, skill, and a secret that can control Lucia’s overpowering magic – all so they can use the Kindred to win back their fallen kingdoms.

• THE WATCHERS follow Melenia out of the Sanctuary. They ally in the flesh with King Gaius, who vows to use Lucia’s powers to unveil the Kindred.

The only certainty in the dark times is that whoever finds the magic first will control the fate of Mytica… but fate can be fickle when magic is involved.

The Magicians |Syfy

3oejhjjkxmbfby42wi

Let me just say, I stumbled upon The Magicians while channel surfing when it first aired. I saw a trailer for the show and wanted to watch it. But of course, I missed the first episode in their two hour season premiere, so I gave up. I rediscovered it last week after there was a marathon.. OMG.
My friend and I binged watched the entire season in like 4 days. We finished it last night and I am NOT okay. January can’t come quick enough.
If you want a show about magic with humor and drama, watch it. And if you already watch it, comment below your thoughts on the finale. AHH!

The Vampire Diaries | The CW

2852kppqrouiu

I finished season 5 last night and I cried so much that I could barely see the screen. I’m not a cryer. I don’t cry often for ANYTHING. But for some reason, The Vampire Diaries has me crying ALL THE TIME. I didn’t even want to watch this show but I started it and now I’m obsessed.
I’m upset as to how the season ended but I’m happy that old characters are returning (Alaric, basically). I’m excited and a bit nervous to see what is going to happen to Daemon and Bonnie. My babies are in trouble and I want to save them! I’ll probably watch tonight because I can’t deal.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

fantastic-beasts-where-find-them-movie-poster

OH MY GOSH. I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN. It was so perfect and brilliant and beautiful and I loved it so much. It was so wonderful to go back to the Wizarding World. From the moment the Warner Brother’s symbol came on screen to the end, I fangirled the entire time.
The story was great. It was suspenseful and filled with humor that it was evident that JK Rowling wrote it. The movie was everything I wanted it to be and more. If you haven’t seen it yet, GO NOW!
